Web Design by Michael Stalker

Do you need a new website? Do you need your current site worked on? Whatever you needs are, I can help!

Semantic HTML and CSS

I build sites that are cleanly coded and validate properly. Content stays separate from markup. Besides just being a good practice, this helps pages rank better with search engines. Web designers have only begun to take full advantage of the flexibility CSS offers. This will especially be true in the future as CSS3 support blossoms.

JavaScript

Do you need something to give your site some interactivity? JavaScript is a good way to give your pages a little zing. This can make run-of-the-mill navigation turn into drop-down menus, tabbed browsing, and more! Nevertheless, it is important to make sure that web pages still display correctly without JavaScript, since 1 out of 20 people don't have JavaScript enabled in their browsers.

Usability

Have you ever seen a website like Zaha Hadid's architecture site? A bit hard to use, isn't it? A site like this makes you exclaim, "What were they thinking when they designed this site?" Even if your site isn't quite as user-unfriendly as this one, the hidden cost of bad usability is probably higher than you realize. If your site isn't easy to use, you lose clients and employee productivity drops.

That is why it is crucial to make websites that are usable. Visitor-centered web pages are a necessary component to website usability. The less visitors have to think about how to use a website, the better. Each choice should be an easy one. Links should look like links. Visitors should know where each link will take them. Navigation should be consistent. Steve Krug's book, Don't Make Me Think has heavily influenced my approach to usable website design.

Inforation Architure

Information is the most important part of a website. Information does no good if no one can find it. It is therefore very important to arrange a webiste in such a way that visitors can find what they need. That is why information architecture is so important.

Information architecture is closely related to usability. The Informaiton Architecture Institute says it is "The art and science of organizing and labeling websites, intranets, online communities and software to support usability." I work hard to employ strong information architecture principles in the sites I design.

Search Engine Optimization

Just as information on your website does no good if no one can find it, your website does no good if no one can find it. Most web site traffic comes from search engines like Google. Optimizing your website so these search engines can find it is crucial to your site's success.

I am certified in Advanced Search Engine Marketing Skills by the Search Engine Academy. I can help you target specific keywords, climb in search engine rankings, and increase traffic to your website.

But site traffic isn't enough to make a business succeed. I'll help you develop a marketing strategy that will help turn site visitors into customers.
